Sim Chan
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Hong Kong in 1987, graduated from Hong Kong Art School, Major in Painting.
Sim Chan’s early works depict local cityscape and urban architecture as a record of his observation and tactile experience in the city. Known for his hand-crafted irregular frames of the sky, kites and back-lit canvas paintings, he delves into realms of imagination, reality, consciousness and form through painting and installation. His recent works explore the theme of light through experimental approaches in media beyond conventional painting methods.
In 2007, Sim set up his studio in Fotan, Hong Kong. He participated in the artist-in-residence programme in Beijing in 2009. In 2011 and 2013, he was selected as one of the nominees for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize and was awarded “40under40” Global Creative Talent by Perspective Magazine in 2013. In the same year, he was commissioned to create a public art installation at Hong Kong Arts Centre. He was selected by "Art ＠ Government Buildings 2013-14" to create a public art installation and paintings at Queen Elizabeth Stadium. In 2016, he participated in the 15th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition—“Stratagems in Architecture”.
Sim has actively participated in various art exhibitions since 2007 and his work has been exhibited internationally including in Hong Kong, Macau, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok, Korea, London, Venice, Zurich and Melbourne. His works have been collected by the Art Promotion Office, Hysan Place, Leo Gallery, Red Elation Gallery, private collectors in Hong Kong and abroad.
