ANGE MCCALMONT

BIOGRAPHY

Ange McCalmont is an Irish contemporary artist based in Hong Kong.

Thematically, her work takes inspiration from a street and pop art aesthetic, as well as the rich cultural tapestry of the East.

Ange’s work explores notions of femininity and womanhood within an Asian cultural context. Bringing together elements of decoration and bright colour combinations, her work incorporates cultural symbols and themes that reference traditional tropes in Asian art and literature of strength, perseverance, beauty, bravery, courage and hope. Her signature style incorporates hand drawn multiple layer stencils which are an integral part of her process.

After studying Foundation Art (DIP) and BA(Hons) Visual Arts at De Montfort University (UK), she swapped paint brushes for a long career in the music industry before later retraining to work with entrenched rough sleepers on the streets of Central London.

After losing her mother to Covid-19, she found herself reconnecting with her art to process grief and heal. This journey reignited her passion to create and, in February 2023, she made the jump to become a full-time artist.

Since then, she has developed a growing portfolio, exhibiting work in Singapore and with a number of private commissions and works sold privately in both Asia and the U.K.
