BIOGRAPHY

Chan KingLong, Ken (1997-), studied Visual Art at Hong Kong Baptist University Associate programme and Fine Arts in RMIT University Bachelor Degree, majoring in painting. KingLong’s painting and images display different perceptions and interpretations of physical and emotional reality. His research engages with the ideas relating to the State of existence, sense of belonging, misery, time, and subconscious that is inspired by or reflecting cultural identity,
social phenomenon, global issues, and personal experience aspects. The presentation of works could be interpreted as the hybridity of abstraction and figurative, that contains multiple directivities and imaginative links between subject matters. Isolated, depressed, distressed "scenes" have been/ will be created as emotional and "real" expressions which are responses/ reactions to the local situation.

“When I look at my own paintings, I often can’t tell whether I should call it abstract or realistic. There is no correct answer to define, interpret what the “character” is. Personally, I don’t think it is a problem that artists are not forcing people to agree with their views or to listen to a scheduled story. Instead of just telling, I prefer to put forward or to question. As a painter, interacting with the audience is just like making a piece of collage. Artist is the one who intervenes between issues, it could be personal or social, and people. For my work, I put things together, extend and imagine. I would like to share the fantasy and emotional alternative realism to people, giving them a space to release and to be sensitive to the unseen reality...

The main messages that I want to carry in my work are to emerge and expose different perceptions of states of existence, that reflect and respond to histories, global misery, social phenomenon, living status and personal experiences, in the form of painting. It is both real and abstract. It feels restless and puzzling.”
