SILENT INK, GENERATIONS AWAIT

For nearly 2000 years, the tools of Chinese calligraphy — brush, ink, paper — have remained unchanged. Yet history shows that each transformation of medium, from oracle bones to bronze vessels to paper, reshaped the aesthetics and rhythm of writing.
Silent Ink, Generations Await extends this lineage by carrying calligraphy into three-dimensional space. Here, the brush is replaced by the whole body. In virtual reality, movements are inscribed as flowing trajectories, then solidified into sculptural structures. This is Body Calligraphy: at once a performance in the air and an architectural composition in space. Viewers encounter writing not only as text, but as movement made material.
This exhibition, part of the PhD research of Hong Kong artist and researcher Pierre “Yishao” Shum at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, presents the full scope of Body Calligraphy. Works include 3D sculptures, immersive VR experiences, and traces of live performances.
All non-CityUHK members must pre-register via the University’s Visitor Registration System (VRS) before entering the campus. The online registration service is unavailable on Saturdays, Sundays and outside office hours, so please reserve in advance.
