Symbiosis: AVA MA Graduation Show
The Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) under the School of Creative Arts (SCA) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) will present its Master of Arts in Visual Arts Graduation Show 2025 (MA Grad Show 2025) from 12 to 27 July at the University’s Kai Tak Campus. The exhibition, themed Symbiosis, will present works by 23 AVA graduating students, showcasing their creativity and endeavours.
The 2025 Master of Visual Arts Graduation Exhibition, hosted by AVA at Hong Kong Baptist University, adopts the theme Symbiosis. This concept originates from the Greek word symbíōsis, signifying various forms of companionship and coexistence. It draws inspiration from the cultural metaphor of “learning from the same master but started one's school” in Ruzhen Li’s Qing Dynasty novel Flowers in the Mirror. The theme explores how artists grow in diverse directions while rooted in a shared academic foundation: each artist builds on predecessors’ wisdom, integrating personal innovation to form a unique perspective. It examines the symbiotic relationship between artistic practices—interconnected yet independent—unveiling the interweaving and renewal of knowledge, style, creativity, and experience.

today | stay
today | stay brings to light a vision of passages amid distant voyages set against the backdrop of Hong Kong in a new exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Nikil Inaya. Surveying the prelusive decade of his oeuvre the artist elicits a familiarity with the metropolis to credit its enduring internationality as well as its caveat as liminal destination town. Dedicated to his late grandmother Shanta Bala is a collection of still lifes that inform an interpenetrative figure-ground relationship within the dialectic of nature morte painting. These vanitas pilgrimages reflect an ephemeris of love, loss and legacy, lending themselves to prelapsarian themes and eschatological discourse alike. Sustaining this direction is a succession of portraits alluding to folklore traditions and the ritual of naturalists to confront classical subject matters as analogous as Puranic iconography and Shakespearean drama. The performative act itself of painting becomes the praxis around which revolves a series of monolithic oil canvases interrogating that which frees the actor in as much from formal limitations of language and conventions of habit as from the very boundaries of identity. These tactile surfaces not only nod to the influence of the artist’s late friend Canadian-born Chinese painter Matthew Wong but also draw from the cinema of the Hong Kong New Wave with titles as illuminating as they are elusive to suggest episodic landscapes in a citadel of terminals.

Distance to Origin
13A New Street Art Gallery is proud to present the 1st solo exhibition "Distance to Origin" by Lingmuki, running from 4th to 25th July. The exhibition will feature over 39 pieces of artwork. The magnificent natural scenery of Hong Kong, where mountains meet the sea, attracts countless visitors to explore. Whether locals or tourists, everyone comes to experience the wonderful charm of this city intertwined with nature, enjoying a cleansing and relaxing of the spirit.
Artist Lingmuki is undoubtedly a brilliant new star in the art world. Her creations have garnered widespread attention in multiple cities and have even been included in the private collection of Sheikha Latifa, the princess of Dubai. Lingmuki's works have been featured in prominent exhibitions both domestically and internationally, including in Sydney, Oxford, Singapore, Dubai, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, receiving high praise. She has participated as an artist in prestigious international art events like the Affordable Art Fair, Fine Art Asia, World Art Dubai, and Art Jakarta. Additionally, she has received numerous honors, including the International Visual Arts Council Award, the Asian Youth Art and Design Alliance Award, and the Global Chinese Art and Design Award.
Lingmuki was inspired by a profound line from Bei Dao literature: "If leaving and returning are the two ends of a road, the further you go, the closer you are to your childhood. It is this initial motivation that pushes me to the ends of the earth." This inspired her exhibition titled "Distance to Origin" , a series of works that guide the audience on a spiritual "journey" to reflect on the path of life. The dreams of childhood and the innocence of youth are closely intertwined with the exploration and growth of adulthood, weaving a deeply moving tapestry of life. Her works are rich in meaning, showcasing a diverse range of styles that cleverly blend Eastern and Western cultures. The exhibition "Distance to Origin" features two main series: the Oil Landscapes Series and the Little Muki Series. Although they may appear vastly different in theme and style, their core is closely connected. The Oil Landscapes Series stems from an exploration of space, reflecting her philosophy of journeying, while the Little Muki Series presents the intertwining of childhood and growth through a retrospective lens. This exhibition invites the audience to share in her profound reflections on the journey of life.

Artifice
The Stallery is proud to present Artifice, a groundbreaking new exhibition by Ernest Chang,
opening on 24 May 2025. Coinciding with The Stallery’s 10th Anniversary in 2025, the series delves deep into the inherent conflicts within our modern existence, the passage of time, and the intersections between the natural and the artificial.
At its core, Artifice explores the concept of duality—how every aspect of life is made up of
contradictions. This body of work, which began with an exploration of Chinese’s scholar’s rocks, evolved into an examination of nature, existence, and technology. Just as rocks tell the story of millions of years, through their shapes and textures, Artifice juxtaposes the purity of the natural form with the heresy of symbols from contemporary society.
The artist’s fascination with duality is reflected not only in the subject matter but also in the process itself. Months of painstaking work are distilled into an instant through the medium of screen printing, embodying the tension between the long and the short, the deliberate and the immediate. Sculptures that resemble Lingbi stones are cast in bronze and hollow within. The series is the artist’s most conceptual work to date, stripping away color, line, and excess to focus on form and concept. These minimalist pieces draw inspiration from ancient Chinese rock appreciation, which venerates the interplay of solid and void, of permanence and decay. Each piece holds a mirror to reality, revealing both authenticity and deception within it.
Another highlight is the two 120 cm high handmade embroidery works that resembles a silkscreen print at first glance, but reveals its intricacy and craft upon closer inspection. The works on display not only celebrate Chinese craftsmanship but also engage the viewer’s instincts, encouraging deeper appreciation over time.
Set in an immersive environment that mimics an indoor Zen Garden, Artifice is a meditation on how technology in 2025, like life itself, is shaped by both creation and destruction. The artist’s use of contemporary symbols, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, rendered as artful scholar’s rocks, further emphasizes the tension between permanence and ephemerality, between what is natural and what is created by human hands.
“AI is the ultimate dichotomy,” says CHANG, artist and founder of The Stallery. “It’s dead, but it’s alive. This exhibition is about those kinds of conflicts—the human-made versus the natural, the new versus the old, the real versus the artificial. In this sense, every piece is a reflection of what it means to be human in an increasingly artificial world. I am proud to present Artifice, marking The Stallery's milestone as we embark on the next chapter.”
Artifice opens on 24 May 2025 at The Stallery, with a reception from 11am-7pm. The exhibition will run through to 31 August 2025.

Echoes of Substances
Yrellag Gallery is delighted to invite you to the opening of our next solo exhibition, titled “Echoes of Substances” by Andy Ho. The opening will be held on the 5th of July 2025 from 4pm to 7pm with an opening performative sculpture at 5pm. The show will be on view until the 30th of July 2025.
From natural to urban spaces, every stone and particle of dust exists beyond its physical genre. They accumulate in flows, revealing their spatial condition on the axis of time. Situating ourselves within both its material presence and its spatial tension, we seek clues from these on-site found objects. In the unretainable and unreachable past and future, we reconstruct and fumble the wave of peoples and their stories. In this exhibition Ho Hou Wun Andy continues his focus on three-dimensional practice, with installation and sculpture in various materials. His practice explores the essence and interactions between time-space and human beings, through a logical and conceptually oriented approach. Believing that a place shapes a person, his works investigate the influence of spatial context, socioeconomic phenomena, geography, and cultures on our condition of existence and way of thinking, ultimately proposing reflection on our perception and sense of identity.

Sea of Silver Sand
10 Chancery Lane Gallery is pleased to present Sea of Silver Sand, a solo exhibition by acclaimed Chinese contemporary artist Huang Rui. This exhibition showcases Huang Rui’s latest works from his ongoing Sea of Silver Sand series, a deeply meditative body of paintings inspired by his long-standing fascination with Zen gardens and the transient beauty of nature. The exhibition is an associated project of the French May in Hong Kong, marking a significant moment as the artist will be present to attend the opening.
The Sea of Silver Sand series, conceived over the past five years, finds its origins in an initiatory journey Huang Rui undertook in 2000, when he visited Kyoto’s Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) and its famed Zen rock garden. This experience left an indelible mark on the artist’s spiritual and artistic practice, shaping his continued exploration of nature’s fleeting yet eternal presence.

From Mundane, Multitudes
Galerie Koo and Up & Up Art are pleased to announce a joint photography exhibition “From Mundane, Multitudes” by Yung Tak Cheung and Danny Chau.
Upon fresh eyes, everything is wondrous, imperfections often unseen, willfully ignored. Celebration without cynicism. Set against the ponderous, unceasing creep of time, mind and matter are plundered, both. Things that once suffused empty places with radiance, can now no longer be rallied to elicit such joy. Yet time is only a vector for change, whether it is within or without.
From Mundane, Multitudes is a pilgrimage, which posits how our perception of things, ourselves and the places we inhabit, through the lens of time, informs an individual’s world view.
Yun Tak-Cheung’s smaller works are an invitation to quiet intimacy. He imparts great importance on the myriad overlooked objects in daily life; relatively diminutive statures juxtaposition their immense value as silent adjudicators. The pieces he has curated are commonplace, allowing us to form our own associations, highlighting the shared humanity which connects, rather than divides. All things have different meanings for different people, at different moments. Some speak to time not always able to enact change, or for us to unravel truth, others still are portions of our past, misremembered. Through energetic colours, merging images with subtle Chinese characters to create texture and mythology, they are transformed into talismans of optimism and hope in the face of adversity and struggles of life.
Danny Chau’s use of metal dye sublimation is a deliberate musing on the causality between what is and what we imagine is. Rooted in the belief our reality and our dreams are all but illusionary playgrounds, he uses such an approach to speak to this transitory phenomenon. Raw, encompassing close-ups of sediment and rock clash against unyielding human structures. Their tones representative of the magnitude of nature’s indelible power, evoking our eternal compliance.
In some ways, we observe the unerring pliability of humanity beneath slumber’s embrace, to accept the absurdities of dreamscapes without question nor qualm. A sense of unquiet invites curiosity, possibility of impossibility, and with that, the concept of time being in flux, a mere construct, for us to shape, as it shapes us.
Galerie Koo and Up & Up Art continues to promote contemporary art with beauty and colours to art lovers of all levels domestically and internationally. The exhibition continues to make a contribution to promote Hong Kong’s cultural and creative industries.

Dreamscape
3812 Gallery is thrilled to present “Dreamscape", our summer show that collectively lifts the veil on a dreamlike realm of floral and natural landscapes rendered in abstract forms. Promising a tranquil, mesmerising experience that invites quiet contemplation, the exhibition features four young artists, each with a distinctive abstract visual language, weaving a liminal space between reality and mirage, consciousness and the subconscious, past, present, and future.
“Dreamscape”, as it is collectively crafted by a host of new blood, seeks to invite viewers on a visually dynamic, lively, and trippy sojourn—one grounded in each individual’s inner space and unfolding into the conscious sphere for introspection, retrospection, nostalgia, as well as a pure appreciation of nature’s simple beauty. Viewers may well find themselves pleasantly lost in contemplation within the kaleidoscopic dream oases affectionately rendered by the five emerging artists.
All rendered on the unifying canvas of “flora” and “landscape”, each artist’s nuanced “Dreamscape” reflects a distinct facet of their creative process. Thomas Ngan harnesses the brilliance of illumination, casting light on flora and natural scenes to create a bright-shadowed, eclectic vista that hints at life’s dualities of uncertainty and hope. Joanne Chan’s exuberant blooms, painted in vivid flourishes, transport audiences to the height of spring and summer, inviting them to reconnect with nature’s vitality. Subtle and ornate smatterings of flowers in Kwan Yung Yee’s works contribute to a garden-like sanctuary, soothing and introspective. Curtis Chan’s delicately rendered, minimalist flowers—set against a dreamlike soliloquy—offer a utopian and hopeful coda to the exhibition.
Folded between reality and illusion and shrouded in captivating mystery, the exhibition is curated to transport viewers into a shared, coherent, and multi-layered dreamscape. Through masterful technique and bold artistic license, these young artists collectively construct a dream world that transcends surface aesthetics, drawing visitors into profound reflection, both inward and outward.

Ballet with the Devil
PODIUM is delighted to present ‘Ballet with the Devil’, a group exhibition that employs the metaphor of a treacherous yet seductive dance with the diabolical to probe humanity’s entanglement and complex interplay with desire. Navigating the precarious terrain where fantasy and materiality converge, the works compel the viewer to reevaluate the agency of one’s subjectivity when confronted by manifestations of trauma and anxiety rooted in the psyche.
